He was an idiot. Okay, maybe not in the literal sense. Shuuichi wasn't dumb so much as he was a complete fool who didn't think about his words nearly enough.  Going on five months of telling his uncle about a partner that didn't exist, though? That made Shuuichi an idiot, at least, in his book. It was supposed to be a simple fix. He was tired of what surely was meant to be lighthearted teasing about him being single. Saying he wasn't was just the easiest thing to do.  Until it went on. And on. Next thing he knows, it's two days until winter break and his uncle is texting him saying he can't wait to see him, and that he should invite his boyfriend to stay with them.  Shuuichi can only curse himself when he recalls he told the man his supposed partner didn't know anyone around, since he moved from across the country. It had only been to stop his uncle and aunt from trying to figure out if they might know anyone related to him.  It wasn't supposed to come back to bite him. He can’t ask Kaito. His family has already met his friend a handful of times, definitely wouldn't believe they've been together all this time. He tries others, though. Kiibo is going out of state, so he can't help. Gonta is going home for the holidays, but he wishes him luck. Rantarou already has plans.

Hell, he even asks Ryoma. Of course, he gets nothing helpful in response, just some self-loathing comment about how Shuuichi wouldn't want to bring someone like him to meet his family. He's doomed. He's going to be outed as a liar, and his uncle is never going to let him live it down. There's no plausible way out. Or there doesn't seem to be one, until Shuuichi is in his third class of the day and the guy in the seat in front of him turns in his chair to catch Shuuichi's gaze and pointedly roll his eyes at something the professor says. Kokichi Ouma.  They've spoken a few times, even worked together once or twice. He's definitely… eccentric. Maybe not entirely ideal, but they sort of know each other, and he's not hard on the eyes. Shuuichi spends the rest of class trying to figure out how he's going to ask a guy he barely knows to pretend to be his boyfriend for three weeks. When the class is dismissed, he nearly misses him completely due to his distraction. "Kokichi!" He calls after him, quickly shoving his books into his bag and jogging over. "Can I talk to you about something?"

Kokichi Ouma was not a typical 'social butterfly'. Throughout high school, he'd been a typical 'class clown', and made a few friends through his jokes. Otherwise, he had kept his head down. He was small, jokes were an easy defense to the taunting. High school then passed quickly, and the looming threat of college had hung over him. So he ran. Perhaps not in the sense of running away, but in the sense of a 'fresh start'. College would offer him escape from the city he'd known all his life, even if the city he had grown up in was rather large. Not to mention, it offered him an escape from his family. He had never been terribly close to his parents, a loose term- legal guardians was more appropriate, so he felt no guilt moving to some far away town. The only issue with fresh starts was how fresh they really were. College was less of a breeding ground for idiots, bigots, and douchebags than high school had been. There had always been the odd person or two to get on his nerves, but as a whole it was a far better experience than what he was used to. He socialized much easier here, letting a naturally extroverted personality take hold and let him interact with others. He certainly wasn't a fraternity type, but he was involved enough to make some friends all around. His classes were a different story, and some of the general classes he had held people who were far beneath him. Crude, close minded, and unintelligent. A perfect combination of three things he couldn't stand. So in some of his classes, he didn't bother to socialize. .

Today, however, he did something he didn't normally do. He had caught someones eye in an attempt to voice his opinion on the subject the professor was discussing. Truth be told, Shuichi Saihara was someone he wanted to be friends with, but the two were just different enough that he didn't expect it to work. He was one of the few people in this class he could tolerate, the other being two girls- one named Maki Harukawa and her friend Kaede Akamatsu. The two were intelligent, a far cry from some of the others in the room. Kokichi hadn't expected much to come from the eye roll, having planned it to be just a little solidarity between him and the other boy. Really, his day was going smoothly. He only had two classes this day, neatly tucked in a time block that let him relax in his apartment for some time. So it was a surprise when he was nearly out the door and heard his name called from behind him. He quickly spun around to face the source of the voice, coming face to face with a classmate he could tolerate. A grin broke his stoic expression, lopsided and almost casual as he looked at Shuichi. "Hm? What's up, Shu- ichi?" He tacked on the last bit after a split second, not wanting to smack a nickname onto him all too quickly. He had only slung his bag over one shoulder, left hand grabbing the strap as he rocked forward onto the balls of his feet. "If you need a study budy, I'm booked for the day-!" No he wasn't, he just needed to throw something else into the conversation.

Kokichi smiles, and Shuuichi instantly feels like this has gotten ten times harder. He's absolutely going to ruin whatever opinion of him his classmate has.  "Uh, no, not that." He says, wrapping his hands tight around the band of his bag. "I wanted to know-- are you busy over the break?" That's too vague. Shuuichi doesn't even know what it sounds like he's trying to ask, but he's sure it isn't what it is.  "I mean, I sort of talked myself into a predicament, and I was hoping you would be willing to help?" He tries, even if it's still on the vague side. He really can't be blamed for being hesitant to just blurt 'would you pretend to date me?' "It might be a little strange, but I'll owe you afterwards?"

Kokichi's eyes flick over Shuichi's expression, still keeping that casual smile on his face. The other boy seemed rather nervous, and he was curious as to what could possibly cause something like that. Rather than speculate, he listened. The first question gave him pause, and he found himself looking thoughtful for a few moments. He truly hadn't planned to go home. It likely wouldn't make much of a difference whether or not he did end up going home. So, Shuichi's question was.. certainly something to think about. The thoughtful expression brightened back up into a grin, and he leaned forward the slightest bit. "Free over break? Could it be that Shuichi wants to hang out with me?" The statement was punctuated with a bright laugh, and the bright expression remained as he spoke next. "Mhm! Free all break. What's the issue you've cornered yourself with?" His head tilted in curiosity, watching how Shuichi might react. "It's not something stupid for a pick up line like your virgnity.. right?"
Avatar
"Sort of?" He says, laughing back out of nerves. "You'd definitely be hanging out with me a lot." He flushes at the pick-up line question, shaking his head. How cheesy. Did people really say that kind of thing to him enough for him to expect it? "Oh, no, definitely nothing like that." He takes a deep breath, inwardly sighing. That's enough beating around the bush. He may as well just say it and deal with the consequences.  "I may have convinced my family I was seeing someone and was going to bring them by for the holidays? Which wouldn't be a major problem if I wasn't completely single." His hands squeeze once around the bag, before loosening just enough to stop it from wrinkling too bad. "I, uh, was wondering if you might be willing to come spend Christmas with my family as my… fake boyfriend?" He sighs aloud after saying it, cringing at just how ridiculous it sounded. "I know we don't really know each other well, and I definitely wouldn't ask you to do something this weird if I wasn't completely desperate…"

Whatever Kokichi had been expecting.. It was not that. Best case scenario, he had been expecting a timid, albeit genuine, invitation to hang out. At worst, he was expecting.. he wasn't sure. His expectations were low walking into the conversation. And for the first time in a long time, Kokichi Ouma was speechless. This slight lapse didn't last very long, but it was long enough that it was likely to be noticed. Despite his confusion, the next statement came easily. He had no intentions of going back home over the break, so this would give him an interesting experience. Free place to stay, free food, and maybe a chance to peek into a more 'normal' life. It sounded perfect. That didn't mean he'd accept so readily. He still had to poke and prod. A bright laugh escaped him, and he leaned forward on his toes just a bit, leaning up to get a little closer to Shuichi. His expression stilled, and he quirked a brow at him."What's in it for me?" He asked, voice having dropped down to a whisper.

There it was.  The awkward pause in which Kokichi tries to determine how to decline without making it obvious he thinks Shuuichi is a complete freak.  Or maybe not? The next words certainly aren't what was expected. "In it for…" Shuuichi repeats, nearly stumbling at the sudden change in proximity. "Whatever you want? You're figuratively saving my life in this situation. Work, money, a favor, anything is fine." "Oh, and of course we'd be housing and feeding you during." He adds, in case Kokichi thought he may expect him to somehow pay for anything or stay elsewhere during. "And there's Christmas as well, and you definitely wouldn't be lacking any gifts." That is without a doubt true. His family wouldn't ever allow someone to be around on Christmas day without getting them a good chunk of gifts. Shuuichi hopes in case of his accepting, he can get to know Kokichi quickly enough to get him a good gift before the holiday.

The slight stumbled step back from his classmate drew another bright laugh from Kokichi. He leaned back into his own space, resting back onto his heels as he listened. Whatever you want? That was certainly a way to phrase it, and yet somehow it let him see just how much Shuichi needed someone to help him out. He was compelled to give in. It wasn't as if he had plans- nor did he need any compensation. Saihara was one of the few tolerable people here, after all. He wouldn't at all mind spending some more time with him. There was no hesitation in his actions as he slipped his phone from his pocket, opening the contacts screen so he could add Shuichi to his phone. He turned the phone around, holding the device out to the other. "Well, my beloved Saihara!" He laughed again, this one a little brighter, "If we're dating I should have your number, don't you think?" The statement was accompanied by a wink, and he absolutely planned on doing this all out. "Plus-" He drew out the syllable in much the same way a child would. "I gotta know what to get your family!" (edited)

Kokichi turns his phone towards him, and Shuuichi can't help his confusion. What kind of a rejection is this? Then the contact screen processes, and Kokichi speaks up, all flirty in tone and action. Shuuichi momentarily forgets how he could have possibly thought anyone else could have pulled this off. He releases a relieved breath he didn't realize he was holding. "Thank you." He says, reaching out to take the phone. "Really. I don't know what I'd do if you'd said no." He enters his number, and even tosses in his family address, just for ease later, before handing the phone back to Kokichi. "Uh, could we meet up later to discuss this? I'm supposed to be heading down a day after the break starts, so I know this is pretty short notice."

"Ooh- three days? Tight schedule, Shu." The nickname slipped out easily as he took his phone back. He shot a quick text message to Shuichi so his classmate could save his number as well, 😘✌️, before he slipped his phone back into his pocket to look up at him. Three days. That wasn't the worst case scenario. He had some time to pull his things together, and it wasn't as if he had any plans to cancel on. He let out a seemingly exasperated sigh, shaking his head. "I guess I have to cancel my super important meetings." The grin spread back on his face after a moment, making it obvious that he hadn't been telling the truth. He thought over Shuichi's next question, "Do you have a class anytime soon? I'm free for the day." His tone had evened out, almost more serious. He knew how to lie, but now he needed to see if Shuichi could. Otherwise, he'd need to guide this. The smaller boy lit up after a moment, "It's like a date!" A bright laugh punctuated his words, happy to use this as ammunition for his jokes.

"Sorry." Shuuichi apologizes immediately, noting the nickname but being far too grateful to comment on it. His phone buzzes in his pocket with the incoming message. "I would have told you sooner had I known..." He definitely would have. Three days is barely any time to form whatever story they have to tell, definitely not enough to get to know each other. He's sure they'll manage, though. "I guess so." He agrees, chuckling a bit. Kokichi's mannerisms definitely make it easier to push down the awkwardness of this whole encounter. "No, not anytime today." He says, tugging out his phone to save Kokichi's number. "We can grab coffee and talk now, if that's okay?" A heat spreads across his ears at Kokichi's teasing as he tucks the device back, but he does his best to keep his tone level and completely unembarrassed. "A date? I guess it is like that."
Avatar
Ah, so he had agreed. For some reason, Kokichi was expecting some time to calm his mind before he had to jump right into fake dating someone. Still, their date-but-not-date was right now, and he needed to get as much information as possible. "Three days is more than enough time." He seemed to be contemplating something, mind tossing a few different ideas around. They had, obviously, met through their classes, but first he had to identify whether or not Shuichi's family was expecting anything specific. Kokichi moved to take a step towards the door, thinking better of it and offering his hand to Shuichi. The motion was accompanied by a wink and a grin, waiting for him to take it or reject it. Once he did, he'd begin walking. "So- What have you told your family about us, my dear?" It was cheesy, but he tacked it on. All his words came easily, as if this were real and not something he'd just been thrown into headfirst. Lying was his speciality, given his tendency to prank and joke.

Shuuichi's brows raise to his hairline at the hand held out to him.  "Oh." He says, blinking away the surprise and grasping Kokichi's hand. If they're going to do this, he might as well get familiar with things like this.  Kokichi's hand is surprisingly warm to the touch. He hopes it isn't too awkward a difference to his own. Shuuichi knows he runs cold, always has. At the very least, he knows his hands feel fine.  He's got to stop being so easily surprised by Kokichi. He just seems to be taking this in stride. More than Shuuichi could say he expected from anyone other than Kaito. "I, uh, told them I was seeing someone from school. Said he moved across country, so he doesn't know many people here. That he isn't close with his family out there, either." He gives the smallest of shrugs. "Not much else, really, outside of reasons I couldn't bring him around. No excuse this time around, unfortunately."

Kokichi truly hadn't expected Shuichi to reciprocate and take his hand in turn. Not that he minded at all. Kokichi typically felt rather cold (he always had a hoodie or jacket on, after all) but he blamed that on being small and losing heat too quickly. So his own hands, while not as cold as Shuichi's, were still a little cold. It was a nice difference, not one he minded all too much. He faked a gasp, his free hand moving up to cover his mouth. It dropped back to his side in a heartbeat, and he continued to speak and lead the way to the coffee shop the two were headed towards. "Oh. My god. How did you know so much about me?" He glanced back at Shuichi, offering a joking wink. No telling whether or not Shuichi had actually been right. "So, they're not expecting some buff hunk who could sweep you off your feet?" He asked, "I think I could do the last part. Not too easy to lie about being buff." His tone was one of almost amusement as he spoke to Shuichi. Interesting. It seemed he didn't have all too much to worry about in terms of living up to expectations.

He has half a mind to wonder what the other students may think. Would his friends in class approach him with teases and pats on the back after catching word of how he walked the courtyard hands joined with Kokichi Ouma? The idea isn't so much as bothersome as it is embarrassing when he will eventually have to explain the situation. A concern for another time, perhaps. Shuuichi chuckles, shaking his head. He imagines his uncle's shock at seeing him bring home someone as large as Gonta, is suddenly grateful the gentle giant couldn't help, because no way was he ever going to hear the end of a size difference like that. "They're just expecting a guy?" He says, somewhat uncertain. Shuuichi isn't entirely sure he never said anything about the appearance of his alleged boyfriend, outside of one other thing. "And that he's very, um, pretty..? I think I said that, once or twice." He doesn't make a statement about Kokichi not really having to worry about living up to that, knowing that if the other doesn't say as much himself, it is something he's sure they can at least agree on in silence. Shuuichi isn't at all blind enough to think Kokichi is anything but attractive.
