Waking Kanata up with pancakes was not something he did every day, but he did it often enough that it had sort of become ingrained in his weekly routine. He usually tried to do it on the weekends where they were both free, those days where they had enough time to lay with one another and just soak in each other's presence.
Of course, he'd have woken up Chiaki too but... well, the hero had a lot more energy in him than Kaoru could muster at six in the morning, and so getting him to stay in bed was a lost cause from the start. So, instead, he'd save him a pancake or two and wait for him to come back (he didn't like sweets much though, so sometimes Kaoru would make crepes and fill them with something savory for him -- this morning, however, he'd saved him some pancakes and fruit).
He'd prepared a little plate for Kanata (begrudgingly giving them a little saucer of soy sauce) with fruit and pancakes to their liking, and he'd brought it to them. He woke them with a soft kiss on the forehead, and adjusted the blankets and pillows so they could sit up a little more comfortably.
However, he didn't get the usual response he'd get from them. The sudden shift made him knit his brows together, trying to figure out what might have caused their confusion.
Kaoru laughed a little awkwardly, reaching up to place a gentle hand against their forehead and feel their temperature to make sure they weren't burning up -- nope. No fever, nothing that might indicate they had fallen ill. Huh?
"Kanata-" No honorific, obviously, he was close enough to them. "Don't be silly~ Did you have a bad dream? I always bring you breakfast on the Saturdays we have off." His smile was gentle, not wanting to overwhelm them if they did have a bad dream. "C'mon, you can eat your pancakes and tell me about it if it was bad. You alright...?"
